Civic Leadership Academy Trains High School Students as N.H.'s Future Leaders

For many high school students, making the most of New Hampshire’s short summer means heading to the beach. For 20 of the state’s top students, however, it means spending two weeks learning about civics in action at Saint Anselm College's second annual Civic Leadership Academy (CLA).

The participants moved into Saint Anselm residence halls Friday, July 7, and commenced an intensive, two-week program created by the college’s New Hampshire Institute of Politics. The CLA aims to equip young leaders for active, engaged citizenship, and to develop a leadership pipeline for New Hampshire’s future.

You can listen to a podcast of a CLA panel discussion featuring former Gov. Steve Merrill and democratic analyst Joe Keefe at the bottom of this post.

Sam Tombarelli, a New Hampshire civics teacher from Portsmouth High School, is leading the learning, joined by such guest speakers as Secretary of State William Gardner, Sen. Lou D’Allessandro, former House Speaker Donna Sytek and Saint Anselm professors.

Students have toured the N.H. Supreme Court and met with Chief Justice John Broderick, watched Gov. John Lynch sign a bill into law and witnessed a debate on school funding. They have heard from political reporters and learned about effective writing. On July 19, they witnessed an Executive Council meeting held at the NHIOP.

The students not only witness government in action, they also try their hand at public policy. Teams of CLA students select civic or social issues and plan projects to address them. The projects will be judged Friday, July 21, the day the program ends with graduation.
