Saint Anselm in the News
June 27, 2006
Saint Anselm, its people and programs, made the news in a variety of ways this spring. The New Mexican interviewed artist Michael Bergt and mentioned he will exhibit his work next spring at the Chapel Art Center.
The death of John Windhausen, professor emeritus, was the subject of a full obituary in the New Hampshire Union Leader, which quoted Fr. Peter Guerin, O.S.B., assistant professor of theology. One of the country’s leading Russian and European scholars, Windhausen founded Saint Anselm’s Russian studies program and assisted in developing the humanities program.
Dean Spiliotes, New Hampshire Institute of Politics research director, talked to the Union Leader about Gov. John Lynch’s visibility and response during crisis. In times of trouble, people “ look toward a chief executive, mayor, a governor or a president, because they have the power and resources to act efficiently,” he said.
Spiliotes and Dante Scala, associate professor of politics, both spoke to a Gannett News Service reporter about the presidential prospects of Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., and former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner, who were at the college in early June for the state Democratic convention.
Scala also was quoted in an Associated Press story posted on the Boston Globe Web site. He was discussing the police investigation into congressional candidate Gary Dodd’s account of a car accident. “I think any kind of positive impact of getting his name out there is nullified by having that [investigation] hang over his head,” Scala said. He also was quoted the Concord Monitor and Congressional Quarterly about Democrat Paul Hode’s run for Congress.
English professor Gary Bouchard’s commencement speech at John Stark Regional High School in Weare, N.H., was covered in the Concord Monitor and Union Leader. He gave the speech in rhyming couplets.
Sam Allen, director of career and employment services, made page one of the New Hampshire Sunday News discussing job prospects for new grads. “Because the job market is fairly rich, I think students feel they can take their time,” he said.
Basketball head coach Keith Dickson was quoted in a Union Leader column that mentioned alumnus Pat Delany, who is video coordinator for the Miami Heat. “I’d say of all the kids I’ve had, Pat saw the floor the best,” Dickson said. A separate column looked at the gaps left in Dickson’s team by graduating seniors.
A New Hampshire Sunday News story that quoted Admission Director Nancy Griffin on the gender balance in college student populations was posted on the Web sites of the Boston Globe, WMUR-TV Manchester and WCAX-TV Burlington, Vt. University Business linked to the Globe posting through its daily Web digest, and the story was published in the paper editions of the Taunton Daily Gazette and Cape Cod Times (Mass); Bennington Banner and Brattleboro Reformer (Vt.), Bangor Daily News (Maine), and Foster’s Daily Democrat, Conway Daily Sun, Berlin Daily Sun, and Valley News (N.H.).
