Isabela Echeverry ‘06 on How “Dreamers Thrive”

October 12, 2007

Isabela Echeverry '06One of the highlights of this year’s President’s Society dinner was a moving speech delivered by Isabela Echeverry, a 2006 graduate of Saint Anselm College. Isabella described her dream of leaving Mexico to study in the United States upon her high school graduation. She was repeatedly told by people that her aspirations were too high and that “dreamers don’t survive.”

Despite this, she held out hope and applied to Saint Anselm College. Not only was she admitted to the college, but she was able to attend due to the generous support of college benefactors. Isabela greatly values her time spent on the hilltop in Manchester, N.H. She went from a little girl in Mexico who wondered “What if” to a graduate student at Columbia University in New York City who now asks “What’s next”?

She believes there is relevance for current students, as most of the nurses in her film were the same age during their Vietnam service as today’s college juniors and seniors.

Professor Carson spent more than a decade researching the stories of Vietnam nurses. She felt it was important to make a documentary film to ensure that these stories would not be lost to history.

Father Jonathan Delivers Homily at Opening Mass

September 10, 2007

On the first day of classes in late August, students and faculty filled the pews of the Abbey Church to celebrate the opening mass of the 2007-2008 academic year. Father Jonathan DeFelice, O.S.B, president of Saint Anselm College, delivered the homily in which he praises Saint Monica and Pope Benedict XVI.

He spoke about the relationship between “humanity and holiness”. Pope Benedict used the Latin correlative “Et… Et”, meaning the Great Both… And, to answer a priest who had been told he spent too much time playing soccer and not enough time participating in Eucharistic Adoration.

The Holy Father stated that one should not have to choose but can both play soccer and be devoted to God. Father Jonathan applied this to life at Saint Anselm College. He spoke about how we as individuals and as a college community can use this message in our daily lives. He concluded his homily with the hope that the school year can “begin with the joy that comes from knowing that our faith is neither an obstacle nor a threat to true learning; nor is learning an obstacle or a threat to our faith.”
