		<itunes:summary>On September 10, Dr. Azar Nafisi, scholar and best selling author of Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books spoke at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics.

Nafisi's talk "The Republic of the Imagination" discusses the ways in which literature transcends political barriers. She argues that literature and imagination are ways to connect and change the world and believes they are necessary for a vibrant, vital culture.

In her lecture, Nafisi questioned, "What would happen if imagination was taken out of the equation? Is it possible to still have a culture with a vision?" She proposes a Republic of the Imagination; a state with a future, a place where all can truly be free.

She argues that imagination is not something you go to and then leave behind. The imagination allows us to place ourselves in others experiences, opening our eyes to the world around us. Through the eyes of imagination we can see an alternative view.

Nafisi is the director of the Dialogue Project at the Foreign Policy Institute of John Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C. She teaches courses on the relation between culture and politics and has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and The New Republic.

Funding for this event was generously provided by a gift from BAE Systems of Nashua.

Additional support provided by the Norwin S. and Elizabeth N. Bean Foundation, and the Distinguished Scholar Series at the NHIOP.

		<itunes:summary>Following a morning of unpacking and meeting new faces, Saint Anselm's 540 new students were welcomed to the college community by Father Jonathan DeFelice, O.S.B., college president (listen to remarks at end of post). In all, 508 first year students have enrolled, along with 30 transfer students and two visiting students: one from Ireland and one from Japan.

ldquo;You have worked so hard to get to this day. You have earned a place in our community, and we are so very happy that you are here,rdquo; Father Jonathan said as he welcomed the class on the college quad under a bright blue sky.

ldquo;We believe in you, and what you are capable of accomplishing, otherwise you wouldnrsquo;t be here. We also believe that we have an outstanding program of liberal arts education that will help you to become truly well-educated men and women, citizens of our democracy who are engaged in our communities, leaders in our free society who will know right from wrong and will have the courage and the will to build a civilization of love. We believe that we offer you an education that will help you be in awe and wonder of the world around you for the rest of your lives.rdquo;

ldquo;The journey you begin today will lead you to much more than the acquisition of a college degree, it will lead you to the freedom that comes with an education. Not every man and woman in our country has the opportunity that is before you today. There are many that never get to make this journey, so savor every step of your journey, beginning with your very first step today. In this place, where you will with the support of all of us here, that will build the bridge that will connect your past to your future.rdquo;

The day began with the arrival of the freshman class and transfer students. Overloaded cars and vans quickly filled parking lots, as the morning unfolded. Upperclassmen spent their morning as parking attendants, tour guides, and were quick to lend an extra set of hands to complete the load in. A number of upperclassmen have already returned to campus, serving as Resident Assistants and Orientation Leaders.

Through Sunday morning, the new students are the sole focus of the campus community. With a schedule featuring a barbeque, an introductory round-robin to campus services, a day of community service and a semi-formal class dinner in store, the students are sure to remain busy.</itunes:summary>
